Samsung’s smartphone portfolio has also been given an overhaul, with the Korean giant unveiling four new additions to its Omnia range - the Omnia II, the OmniaLITE and two OmniaPRO models, all using Microsoft Corp's Windows Mobile platform.

Samsung also launched a new mass-distribution "Jet" model on Monday, It features a full touch screen, a next-generation display and improved processor to deliver faster mobile Internet access.

Reuters claims both Nokia and Samsung are trying to draw attention from and compete with the huge noise created by both the Apple iPhone 3G S and Palm Pre recently - only at lower pricepoints.

Smartphones keeping sector buoyant
In the last two weeks Apple Inc's launch of the upgraded iPhone and Palm Inc's Pre model have created much competition in this buoyant section of an otherwise shrinking industry.

"What is clear is that we are heading to one of the most competitive fourth-quarters we have had," Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi told Reuters.

"Nokia is trying to address the very competitive mid-range space given the prices of the Pre and the new iPhone.

Nokia can also benefit from a lower contract tariff than these two (Pre and iPhone) devices have, which will make the products more competitive, but certainly not offering a comparable user experience,” Milanesi added.
